Lausanne – Alpiq is continuing its growth strategy in the field of flexible plants and investing further in battery storage projects: Alpiq has signed an agreement with the established project developer ToRa GmbH for the implementation of a large battery storage project in Saxony. The plant will have a capacity of at least 36 MW and a storage capacity of 144 MWh. Alpiq recently secured a project pipeline for BESS with a capacity of 370 MW, also in Germany.
With its investment in the planned battery energy storage system (BESS) in the German state of Saxony, Alpiq is supporting the efficient use of wind and solar power. The project is being developed by ToRa GmbH. The service company, based in Leer (Lower Saxony), has more than 20 years of experience in planning and implementing projects in the field of renewable energies. Combined with Alpiq’s expertise in the operation and marketing of flexible plants and its financial stability, this is the ideal prerequisite for bringing projects to fruition in the highly competitive and complex market for battery storage in Germany. The BESS in Saxony is expected to be ready for construction in the first quarter of 2026, with commissioning planned for the second quarter of 2028.
“Investing in this project is further proof of our ambition to actively shape the energy transition and further strengthen our leading role in the field of flexibility in Europe,” says Lukas Gresnigt, Head of International and member of the Executive Board of Alpiq. “Flexible facilities such as battery storage systems are essential for the success of the energy transition and the expansion of electricity production from renewable energies. They strengthen security of supply by reducing grid bottlenecks and increasing the urgently needed flexibility of the energy system.”
Alpiq focuses on the targeted expansion of large battery storage facilities
With its highly flexible hydropower plants and thermal power stations, Alpiq has over 100 years of expertise in operating flexible plants. Alpiq is pursuing a clear strategy to further expand its leading position in this area in Europe – both in the field of hydropower and through the targeted expansion of battery storage systems in key European markets.
A few days ago, Alpiq secured a 370 MW project pipeline for BESS facilities in the German states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt, continuing a series of successes in the BESS sector: In October, Alpiq commissioned its first own BESS (30 MW / Valkeakoski, Finland) and at the end of November, Alpiq concluded an innovative tolling agreement in Germany for the 103.5 MW Schuby large-scale battery storage facility (federal state of Schleswig-Holstein). In addition, two BESS plants owned by Alpiq are under construction in France (La Corne-en-Vexin / 100 MW) and Finland (Haapajärvi / 125 MW). Both are scheduled to be operational in the first half of 2027 and will be operated by Alpiq. In Switzerland, Alpiq has been successfully marketing third-party batteries since 2018 and manages a 50 MW portfolio, including a 20 MW plant in Central Switzerland.
The latest investment in the BESS portfolio in Germany once again underscores Alpiq’s commitment to supporting the energy transition and contributing to a sustainable energy future.
